Lawlor was inspired to write this account of going west by the real
diaries of photographer William Henry Jackson. Jackson was a
photographer but when he decided to go West, at the age of 23. he hired
on as a bullwhacker for a freighting outfit. He sketched
landmarks along his travels on the Old Oregon Trail.
